Reading Tips
- Make it fun. Make it relaxed. Make it reciprocal - where you and your child take turns to read.
- Talk about the book and its contents before you read it.
- Ask a range of questions starting with what, where, who, how, why, when, and which.
- The 3 p's: Pause, Prompt, Praise (when your child comes across an unknown word, don't tell them what it is. Instead, pause and give them time to think. If they still don't know then give them a prompt or hint... then praise them for getting it right.
- If your child is still having trouble with working out a word, ask, "What would make sense?" and get them to have a play with different possible words in the sentence.
- The next option is to get them to sound it out.
- The last option is to tell them.
